Workflow Management – the 4 phases of CDE
A Common Data Environment (CDE) is essential to the smooth running of any construction project. In this article, we explain the functions of the 4 distinct phases of the CDE workflow.
Read moreThe huge potential offered by BIM is no secret. Organisations across the built environment have been told time and time again of its benefits since it was first introduced almost two decades ago.
And yet despite this, the industry as a whole has fallen short of unlocking all the potential offered by the technology. The main reason for this has been a lack of standardisation – despite wide BIM adoption, the different approaches used have meant that gaps remain, and some of the efficiencies promised have not been achieved.
Step in ISO 19650, a series of global standards created to address the problem. It establishes a common, international approach to information management, providing a framework for best practice. It’s based on PAS 1192, a pre-existing set of UK standards that had begun to gain international recognition for guiding businesses towards the most efficient way to implement BIM. The ISO 19650 is a simplified version of the UK predecessor, taking the fundamental principles, and making them universally applicable.
The advantages ISO 19650 offers from a business perspective are numerous. Companies adhering to the standards are set to save resources, minimise risk and attract new business. It helps you focus on accountability, setting the responsibilities of all stakeholders at the start of the project.
But effecting large-scale organisational change is a big step. There is much to learn, and educating everyone in your company is a challenge. Businesses might even be dragging their feet for fear of being exposed for where they fall short – although the whole point of certification is to find those gaps to help companies improve practices.
